An investor update is a regular, usually monthly or quarterly, communication a founder sends to their investors covering key metrics, progress, challenges, and specific asks, keeping investors informed between formal board meetings.
A good update is honest about what's not working, not just a highlight reel, since investors who are surprised by bad news later trust a founder less than one who flagged a problem early and asked for help. Specific, well-timed asks (an intro, a hire, advice on a decision) tend to get far more engagement than a vague general update.
Consistent updates also do quiet work toward the next raise: investors who've watched a company's real trajectory over many months are easier to bring back for a follow-on round, or to get a warm introduction from, than ones who've heard nothing since the last round closed.
